Dur-Kurigalzu
   A small city constructed by and named for a Kassite king, Kurigalzu I, in the late fifteenth century b.c. Located about 18 miles (29 km) west of Baghdad, Dur-Kurigalzu (modern Aqar Quf) served as the Kassite administrative/political capital, but Babylon remained the religious and ceremonial Kassite center. Dur-Kurigalzu was abandoned after the Kassite dynasty fell in the twelfth century b.c. The city originally featured a fortified defensive wall on its perimeter and a large ziggurat dedicated to the god Enlil. The remains of the ziggurat - mainly its mud-brick core - still reach a height of 187 feet (57m). Some painted murals from the royal palace survive as well, along with some statues. Dur-Kurigalzu was excavated between 1943 and 1945 by a team of Iraqi archaeologists.
